Roland Petit's Carmen
A chance to see Petit's daring choreography to Bizet's opera
When Roland Petit’s daring choreography was premiered in London in 1949, it shocked the ballet world.
Canadian authorities called for a ban on performances while the French traditionalists grieved for what they saw as the defilement of Bizet’s opera.
Despite these reactions, the ballet went on to be performed over 5000 times in the following 50 years and secured Petit’s position as a master choreographer.
In this performance, the Paris Opera Ballet dance the original choreography, conveying not only the intensity of the story but the power of that first scandalous performance.
