Masters of American Music: Thelonius Monk III
Sky Arts 2 celebrates the life and music of a jazz legend
- Article Type: | TV and Radio |
One of ten episodes celebrating the most influential figures in American jazz, this programme traces the life and work of composer Thelonious Monk III.
Monk, the second most-recorded jazz artist after Duke Ellington, was famed for a quirky improvisational style and for being a leading pioneer in bebop. He played with the likes of Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane, and several of his works, including Blue Monk and 52nd Street Theme have become jazz standards.
Interviews, rare archive footage and vintage photographs have all been combined to give a rounded portrayal of the musician’s life.
