African Fantasy

TRILOK GURTU, multipercussionist extraordinary, offers a personal perspective on Africa in his new album. Various singers amplify the African dimension, though being the quirky individual that he is, Gurtu brings in an assortment of instruments from shehnai to didjeridoo and even gets away with a straight classical sitar solo from Ravi Chary.

Somehow it all holds together, though the unity of feeling has more to do with Gurtu’s jazz-tinged Indian aesthetic and the generally upbeat production than the land of the title.
