Bruckner/Strauss: String Quintet; Intermezzo in D minor; Prelude to 'Capriccio'

Though hardly on a par with its illustrious antecedents, notably by Schubert and Mozart, Bruckner’s problematic and unspectacular String Quintet is nonetheless worthy of the splendid attentions lavished upon it by the Raphael Ensemble. Originally drafted in 1878, the work shared the fate of most of Bruckner’s symphonies, being subjected to extensive revision before a completed version appeared in 1885. This excellent release also includes the string sextet Prelude to Strauss’s opera Capriccio. Michael Jameson
