The interest value of this disc lies in the variety of accompanying instruments, drawn from Richard Burnett’s early keyboard collection at Finchcocks, Kent: practically every song, from 17th to 19th centuries, is heard with a keyboard instrument made in its composer’s lifetime. Its charm is the atmosphere of domestic music-making that it successfully creates. This immediacy of sound and the clearly audible texts partly excuse the rough edges in the singing. Janet Bank
