Corelli: 12 Concerti Grossi, Op. 6

Corelli's highly polished anthology from what must have been a lifetime of writing for strings, published a year after his death in 1714, makes a neat package in DG's two-CD series. The English Concert's performances, by a small group but including continuo harpsichord, organ and theorbo, are distinguished by well-judged tempi, accomplished solo playing, and well-blended sonorities (though there are small variations in positioning between sessions).

Perhaps the Concert's habitual brightness and smoothness, so right in Handel or Vivaldi, are slightly less well suited to this music of 17th-century origin. But at the price this set is still highly recommendable. Anthony Burton
