Debussy: Préludes, Book 1; Suite bergamasque; Children's Corner; Images, Book 1; Images, Book 2; Pour le piano; Estampes

Pascal Rogé is an admirable Debussy interpreter, and this ‘Double Decca’ set represents extremely good value, packed with most of Debussy’s best piano music. Rogé’s playing is energetic, sensitive and lyrical – I particularly enjoyed the sensuality of the second book of Images and the liveliness of the Suite bergamasque and Pour le piano. He makes it clear that Debussy was a composer of passion as well as of subtle colouring. My only real complaint is the variation in sound quality from work to work.

Pour le piano, for instance, suffers considerably from its juxtaposition with the better sound of the Préludes. Jessica Duchen
