Following on from his organ cycle Faust, Eben returns to a similar ‘wager between Satan and God on the fate of a human being’. Written in 1987, this work can either be performed as a solo work or with narrator (here in Hebrew) reading the appropriate texts between the movements. Fellow Czech TomásŠ Thon plays Eben’s improvisatory textures and sinewy counterpoint brilliantly. The modern organ at St Mary’s, Opava, provides concrete and steel-like timbres for the biblical scenes. Andrew McCrea
