As keyboard virtuosos go, Frescobaldi of Ferrara (1583-1643) was one of the greatest. Hogwood’s anthology of pieces published between 1615 and 1637 is sympathetic – and indispensable. From ‘the quintessence of the art of improvisation’ (six toccatas) to ‘a refreshing burst of pictorial exuberance’ (the Capriccio sopra la Battaglia), here’s music to delight, inspire and surprise. Finely judged location recording (the German National Museum, Nuremberg). Ates Orga
