Haydn: Die Jahreszeiten

This thoroughly enjoyable reissue will be an attraction for those with limited budgets looking for a good recording of Haydn’s last oratorio, The Seasons. The soloists are, of course, world-class and the performance is first-rate, with a well trained chorus and a lean-sounding orchestra, unlush and happily unsentimental. The recording holds up very well. At full price there is a brilliant, period-instrument recording with Gardiner, and an excellent one recently made in Chicago by Solti and, if you want the work in English, the standard version by Colin Davis.
