The Baccholian male voices are especially impressive, showing great versatility and embracing many moods ranging from the pathos and humour of the plight of a new bride missing her father in Holst’s ‘The Homecoming’ to the passionate intensity of his ‘A Dirge for Two Veterans’ with its relentless, foreboding drum and trumpet rhythms. Elgar’s fine Greek Anthology songs, both elaborate and demanding, are a highlight and Ian Partridge, in excellent voice, is strongly featured in Vaughan Williams’s arrangements of such well-known folksongs as ‘Loch Lomond’.
