Jílek’s performance of the Glagolitic Mass is one of the most attractive available. BenŠacková’s soprano solos are radiant and there is some superb string playing. Paradoxically, the very beauty of the sound achieved seems slightly at variance with the craggy nature of the work – only in the larger tuttis and the uproarious Intrada is he completely at one with Janácek’s vision. Mackerras’s reading of the early cantata Amarus is a good deal more engaged: a wholeheartedly dramatic performance of this moving work. Jan Smaczny
