Khachaturian: Piano Concerto; Dance Suite

Richly endowed with magnificent writing for the soloist, Khachaturian’s Piano Concerto deserves its relative popularity. The sonorities of the slow movement, which include a wailing ‘flexitone’, are mesmerically effective. The Armenian PO makes a big noise, but the textures, particularly in the strings, are thin. The Dance Suite? If these are dances then give me a buffalo stampede any day. Christopher Lambton
