Leoncavallo: I Pagliacci

This Pagliacci though, is spine-tingling from start to finish. Nello Santi is another underrated conductor, full of fire  but excellent at eliciting the subtleties of Leoncavallo’s score, especially in tandem with Caballé’s supremely artistic ‘Stridono lassu’. Domingo may have had even more heart and soul live on stage, but this is a compelling document of the voice in its prime, and Milnes gilds the lily as on would expect.
