Reger: Piano Concerto; Suite im alten Stil

The surprising degree of vehemence that underpins the first movement of Reger’s unjustifiably neglected Piano Concerto may well reflect the political uncertainties of the years immediately preceding World War I. But no less crucial is Reger’s indebtedness to Brahms, whose First Piano Concerto provides an obvious model for both the tempestuous first movement and the ethereal calm of the central Largo. This new recording makes out the best possible case for the work’s reappraisal, especially as Segerstam demonstrates such an instinctive grasp of Reger’s style. Erik Levi
