Satie: Musiques intimes et secrètes; 12 petits chorals; Pièces froides; Préludes flasques; Danses gothiques

Satie was a composer with an attitude, whose deadpan austerity and subversive humour cocked a snook at everybody, including his own supporters, Debussy and Ravel. John Cage revered him, and the term Satie-esque has become a critical label for any music which is sphinx-like.

Satie was a composer with an attitude, whose deadpan austerity and subversive humour cocked a snook at everybody, including his own supporters, Debussy and Ravel. John Cage revered him, and the term Satie-esque has become a critical label for any music which is sphinx-like.

As the second of four discs covering Satie’s complete piano music, this includes pieces written between 1893 and 1913, the middle years of his life, and some of them are rarities. The Hungarian pianist Klára Körmendi is an experienced interpreter of contemporary music and has also made a speciality of French repertoire. She avoids reading into Satie’s music what isn’t there, while remaining sensitive to phrasing and nuance. Adrian Jack
