The musicians formerly known as AFRO CELT SOUND SYSTEM, who borrowed similar ideas when they set out in the mid-Nineties, have rebranded themselves by dropping the last two words of their name. ‘We’ve become a band,’ they modestly say, reflecting an upgrade in the prominence of live playing as opposed to samples.

The beats still go on behind their personal mix of Irish and West African material, but the tracks are now more like songs with strong African vocals and Celtic rhythms supported by live bass and keyboards and especially percussion. And there are fewer guest artists, a sign of confidence.

Apart from the occasional muddle such as a ten-minute mishmash of rock, dub, fiddle and West African drums, the album suggests this outfit, influential in its time, is still full of fomenting energy.
