COMPOSERS: Strauss
LABELS: EMI
WORKS: Don Juan; Death and Transfiguration; Till Eulenspiegel; Alpine Symphony
PERFORMER: Vienna PO/Philadelphia Orchestra/ André Previn
CATALOGUE NO: CZS 7 67570 2 DDD (1980/83)
The VPO sound is unmistakable, but the performances here under Previn’s direction are uncharacteristic, with more animation than usual. Don Juan has impetuosity, Till Eulenspiegel a winning skittishness; but there is also a control evident throughout, particularly in Death and Transfiguration. The Alpine Symphony, with the Philadelphia Orchestra, has a shade more spontaneity and freshness. Nicholas Rast
