Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 (Pathetlque); Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture

Light and shade play through this symphony in almost equal measure, and Munch allows both full expression. With languorous pauses he casts deep shadows, but these are rapidly dispelled by exuberant flourishes and incisive (if not always accurate) playing. In the fantasy overture a slight tape flutter adds to the not displeasing impression that this is a film soundtrack for a lavish Visconti masterpiece. Christopher Lambton
