Afternoon On 3 celebrates Lutosławski’s centenary
Witold Lutosławski was born in Warsaw 100 years ago this Friday and Afternoon On 3 is celebrating this with four episodes devoted to his music.
On Monday, Adam Tomlinson presents a live concert from Media City in Salford. The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Juanjo Mena performs Lutosławski’s Fanfare for the University of Lancaster and Mi-parti. Also on the programme are works by Turina and Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen with soloist, mezzo-soprano Clara Mouriz.
After the concert Penny Gore presents the BBC Symphony Orchestra performing Elgar’s Cockaigne Overture, conducted by Jiří Bělohlávek, and Lutosławski’s Symphony No. 1 under Edward Gardner’s baton.
