BBC Proms: Britten Violin Concerto
Janine Jansen performs with the Orchestre de Paris at the Royal Albert Hall
Paavo Järvi conducts the Orchestre de Paris in Arvo Pärt’s Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten, a piece written by Pärt in an attempt to express his loss for a composer who was in a sense a stranger, but whose music achieved the ‘unusual purity’ that he himself sought in his work.
This is followed by Benjamin Britten’s Violin Concerto, performed in this Prom by Janine Jansen, who describes her deep emotional attachment to the piece: ‘I feel so deeply about this piece…one experiences the incredible strength of it.’
The second half opens with the Mediterranean verve of Berlioz’s overture ‘Le corsaire’ and concludes with the magnificent weight of the full orchestra and organ in Saint-Saëns's Third Symphony, completing the journey from introvert reflection to extrovert display.
