Beethoven's Missa Solemnis
John Nelson conducts Beethoven’s sacred masterpiece
An opportunity to hear Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis in D major, Op. 123 performed by the Chamber Orchestra of Europe under renowned conductor John Nelson. The orchestra is joined by the Gulbenkian Choir and soloists Tamara Wilson (soprano), Elizabeth DeShong (alto), Nikolai Schukoff (tenor) and Alastair Miles (bass).
The five-movement work is one of Beethoven’s crowning achievements in sacred music, and upon completing it he said: ‘My chief aim when I was composing this grand Mass was to awaken and permanently instill religious feelings, not only in the singers, but also in the listeners.’
