Jacques Imbrailo (baritone) and Mark Padmore (tenor) star in Glyndebourne’s production of Britten’s Billy Budd.

The opera is based on a novella by Herman Melville and is a battle of good against evil set on a British man-o-war ship. It tells the story of an innocent young sailor, Billy, who finds himself on collision-course with the ship’s formidable captain, a struggle that can only end in tragedy.

Michael Grandage's excellent production captures the claustrophobia of the HMS Indomitable and the encroaching sense of catastrophe.

The libretto was co-written by EM Forster and the music marked a consolidation of the composer’s operatic style.

Sir Mark Elder conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
