HummelJohann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837) was a renowned piano virtuoso, widely known and celebrated in his own time and long afterwards.

Chopin placed him alongside Mozart and Beethoven as one of the three greatest masters of all time, and he was considered by many to be Haydn’s musical heir.

Reputed to have been Mozart’s favourite pupil, Hummel soon became the most sought-after piano teacher in Germany and he established principles that are still followed today.

Among anecdotes of fame and glory, Donald Macleod also focuses on the more challenging aspects of life as a working musician, such as having to rely on Royal patrons to make a living.
