Composer of the Week: Beethoven
Beethoven masters Vienna
Donald Macleod begins his exploration of Beethoven’s life and music in Vienna, where he was initially regarded as a pianist rather than a composer. Through the programme Macleod presents Beethoven’s early experiences in Vienna through the snapshot of five of the piano sonatas, including the Pastoral and the Appassionata. The piano remained an important instrument for the composer throughout his career; as well as composing 32 Sonatas for the instrument, Beethoven wrote numerous Piano Concertos and other works for the instrument.
