In this week’s series Donald Macleod presents the colourful life of composer Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643), from his move to Venice, to surviving the plague that wiped out a third of the Venetian population.
Throughout the week a number of Monteverdi’s more substantial works will be explored, including the famous Eighth Book of Madrigals, which demonstrates his dramatic style of vocal writing with themes of eroticism, mourning and wit.
