This week, Donald Macleod introduces the life and music of French composer Hector Berlioz. Beginning with an exploration of a remarkably music-free childhood, Macleod looks at the influences and ideals of a complicated man. Berlioz struggled to find critical acclaim in his home country, and this week's programme examines the pull of Shakespeare and England to the composer of Roméo et Juliette and the incredible Symphonie fantastique.

Each episode is repeated on BBC Radio 3 at 6:30pm.
