As part of BBC Radio 3’s Music in the Great War series, Donald MacLeod looks at the life and works of British composer Ivor Gurney, a man whose experience of serving in the trenches hugely influenced his output during and after the war.

Dr Kate Kennedy joins Donald to examine how the composer’s prodigious talent struggled against a long-term battle with mental illness.

After starting his service in the trenches in 1915, Gurney found less time to compose. Episode three explores how this creative hiatus paused when he fell in love with a nurse, Annie Nelson Drummond during his convalescence.

The series will feature several specially recorded performances by the BBC Symphony Orchestra
