Donald Macleod talks to John Adams about his journey from Harvard to California in 1971, and about the works he wrote that were inspired by life on the West Coast. Listen to the composer discuss some of the his early compositions, including Shaker Loops (1978), written in a beach house in San Francisco as well as the symphony which was written in his current studio and inspired by the surrounding giant redwood trees. Over the course of the week Adams reveals the importance of the dramatic landscape and rich cultural life that have kept him in that area of the US.
