Composer of the Week: Pietro Antonio Locatelli
The life and times of the little-known Baroque composer
Donald Macleod investigates the life and music of one of the lesser-known composers of the Baroque era, Pietro Antonio Locatelli.
Locatelli (1695-1764) was an Italian composer and violinist whose virtuosic and innovative technique challenged the musical world's expectations of the instrument and made him a renowned figure in his day.
Macleod explores some of Locatelli’s L'arte del violino and his most notoriously difficult pieces, including the Caprice Op. 3 No 10; the Concerto grosso in B flat Op. 1 No 3; the Concerto Köln and the Locatelli Trio among others.
