While BBC Radio 3's celebrations of Richard Wagner's bicentenary (1813-1883) get under way, Donald Macleod focuses on his life and music in Composer of the Week.

Five programmes focus on the different composers, works and relationships that contributed to Wagner’s revolutionary output.

The first episode looks at the profound influence Beethoven’s (left) music had on Wagner and includes a rare broadcast of his early arrangement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Beethoven’s synthesis of music and poetry undoubtedly influenced the Wagnerian approach to opera, but his piano works also proved an inspiration, and Wagner’s one-movement Piano Sonata will be played.
