The Curse of the Gothic Symphony
A documentary that follows the staging of Havergal Brian’s Gothic Symphony.
Havergal Brian’s Symphony No. 1 (the ‘Gothic) is regarded as the Mount Everest of musical works because of the challenge it offers and accomplishment it requires to tackle it. The piece is two and a half hours long, and is scored for two orchestras, four brass bands and five choirs. This huge force of musicians was successfully summoned at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre in Brisbane in December 2010. This documentary follows the enthusiastic musicians who rose to the daunting challenge of Brian’s monumental work and reveals the difficulties of staging such a large work.
