To celebrate 200 years since Wagner’s birth, Radio 3 is broadcasting live performances of the entire Ring cycle throughout April and May.

Today is Die Walküre starring soprano Deborah Voigt, mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe, tenor Simon O’Neill, soprano Martina Serafin,
bass-baritone Mark Delavan and bass Hans-Peter König. Fabio Luisi conducts the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in this seminal work.

Siegmund is reunited with his twin sister Sieglinde and together they flee the wrath of Sieglinde’s jealous husband Hunding. Siegmund dies at Hunding’s sword, but Sieglinde – who is carrying Siegmund’s child – flees. All the while, Brünhilde vows to protect the lovers, herself being doomed to mortality by the end of this installment.
