In Terra Pax was one of the last pieces Finzi composed before he died at the age of 55. It is a work of exquisite beauty and optimism despite the hopelessness of the context in which it was composed. Finzi had always known tragedy: he lost his father at a young age, and three brothers during his formative years. And In Terra Pax was written while he fought leukemia. Stephen Johnson explores the creative process of the composer who was able to leave such a hopeful musical legacy in spite of it all.
