Opera on 3 continues its Verdi 200 celebrations
As part of the Verdi 200 series, Radio 3 presents his opera Don Carlo recorded at the Royal Opera House.
Tenor Jonas Kaufmann and soprano Anja Harteros perform the lead roles, and Sir Antonio Pappano conducts.
Verdi's opera is a tale of love, conflict, mistaken identity and political intrigue, with the main crux of the plot involving a love triangle between King Philip II, his son Don Carlo, and Elisabeth de Valois, betrothed to the Prince.
In a twist of events, Elisabeth is married to King Philip instead, in order to secure a peace treaty. This particular performance has been described by a critic as ‘an evening of pure vocal pleasure’.
