Anna Netrebko, Anne-Carolyn Bird and Erwin Schrott are among the stars of Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, live from The Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Set in 19th-century Italy, Donizetti’s two-act comedy traces the story of the poor villager Nemorino (Ramon Vargas) as he falls in love with the beautiful landowner Adina (Netrebko).

He first witnesses her reading a book and upon hearing her tell the story of Tristan and Isolde becomes convinced that a magic potion will help him gain Adina’s love. When the travelling doctor Dulcamara (Schrott) passes through the town he has the potion Nemorino is looking for, but Adina continues to taunt him with her indifference.

After accepting a marriage proposal from the sergeant Belcore (Nicola Alaimo) and inviting the entire village to the wedding, Adina finally admits her love for Nemorino and postpones her wedding. Dulcamara is left boasting about the powers of his love potion.

Maurizio Benini conducts.
