José Antonio Abreu’s Social Action For Music
‘Music has to be recognised as an agent for social development in the highest sense because it transmits the highest values – solidarity, harmony, mutual compassion.’
It was with this vision that José Antonio Abreu’s established El Sistema, Venezuela’s state-funded music education programme, in 1975.
The foundation now comprises over 125 youth orchestras in the country and has given thousands of children the opportunity to become classical musicians.
This moving documentary takes us from the violent slums of Caracas to the world’s finest concert venues and reveals how Venezuela’s unique system of music education transforms lives.
