First Night of the Proms
The BBC Proms kicks off with a bumper programme
The world’s largest classical music festival is here and opens with a fabulous concert featuring a new work by Julian Anderson, as well as music by Britten and Lutosławski, two composers whose centenaries we are celebrating this year.
Also on the bill is Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, which will be performed with soloist pianist Stephen Hough. Writing in this year’s Proms programme the pianist describes it as ‘a work of genius’.
Vaughan William’s Sea Symphony is coupled with Britten’s Four Sea Interludes, for which soprano Sally Matthews and baritone Roderick Williams will join the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus as soloists.
