George Benjamin’s Written On Skin
Soprano Barbara Hannigan and baritone Christopher Purves star in George Benjamin's opera
George Benjamin’s acclaimed opera Written On Skin is a story of control, revenge and violence. Martin Crimp’s libretto is based on the 12th-century legend of troubadour Guillem de Cabestany. In Crimp's hands the story has been given a sharp contemporary edge.
A wealthy Protector (Christopher Purves) commissions a young artist (Bejun Mehta) to create a book that glorifies his power and this provokes rage from his wife Agnès (Barbara Hannigan). She transforms from a controlled submissive to a menacing sexual predator, and a powerfully tense situation unfolds.
Directed by Katie Mitchell.
