Renée Flemming performs the title role of Handel’s Rodelinda at the Metropolitan Opera, New York this week on Sky Arts 2. She is joined by countertenor Andreas Scholl and mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blyth.

The acclaimed production from director Stephen Wadsworth has been praised for pacing the plot well and introducing the more intimate style of Baroque opera to a large space successfully. When Bertarido, king of Lombardy and Milan, is ousted by his own brother’s ally Grimoaldo, his wife Rodelinda and their son Flavio are left under Grimoaldo’s control.

Plots to gain power with the king out of the way continue while Bertrando plans to return in disguise and rescue his family. The ending sees Grimoaldo remorseful for his actions, and he is forgiven when he allows King Bertarido to resume his position.
