La Traviata
A modern and rather surreal take on Verdi’s masterpiece
The Metropolitan Opera presents Willy Decker’s version of Verdi’s 1853 opera La Traviata. It is a modern and surreal take on the opera that has received wide acclaim. Starring soprano Natalie Dessay and tenor Matthew Polenzani, the plot revolves around courtesan Violetta Valéry and one of her admirers, Alfredo Germont, a seemingly naïve suitor. Even though Violetta gives her heart to Alfredo, they are separated by family objections, duels and, ultimately, the heroine’s tragic death.
