This year Dame Kiri Te Kanawa is at the helm of the biennial BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Past winners of the competition include soprano Karita Mattila, mezzo-soprano Katarina Karnéus, bass-baritone Bryn Terfel and baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky. 

In the first episode Donald Macleod and Iain Burnside present highlights from the opening recital of the Song Prize competition at the Royal Welsh College of Music in Cardiff. Tune in to BBC Radio 3 at the same time throughout the week to hear further rounds of the competition.
