First performed in Berlin in 1925, Berg’s Wozzeck has lost none of its bite, as you can hear in this performace from the Royal Opera House.

Based on Büchner’s play Woyzeck, the plot follows a man and his lover Marie through their experiences of lust, suspicion and fear, which tear their lives apart.

Serving the captain of a ship, Wozzeck expresses his fear of eternity and is taunted for it. He becomes more and more unsettled, experiencing vivid hallucinations and is unable to console himself, not even talking to the mother of his child, Marie. She has her own doubts – over Wozzeck’s absences at sea and her own desires for other men – until she falls into the arms of a uniformed drum Major. Wozzeck’s suspicion about the pair turns into madness and he soon sees blood everywhere, with fatal consequences.

Starring baritone Simon Keenlyside and soprano Karita Mattila. Sir Mark Elder conducts.
