Opera on 3: Britten’s Gloriana
Britten’s coronation opera is broadcast live from the Royal Opera House
When Britten composed Gloriana for the coronation of HM Queen Elizabeth on June 2nd 1953 it was not received at all well. The opera’s plot tells of the relationship between Queen Elizabeth I and the Earl of Essex and doesn’t portray the queen in a particularly flattering light.
But the work has gradually gained the recognition it deserves and 60 years later is being performed at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. The production stars Susan Bullock as Elizabeth opposite Toby Spence as the Earl of Sussex.
