London Symphony Orchestra performs Stravinsky
Sir John Eliot Gardiner conducts in this Radio 3 Live In Concert
To celebrate his 70th birthday, Sir John Eliot Gardiner conducts the LSO and the Monteverdi Choir in a special concert of music by Stravinsky.
Both works on the programme – the ballet Apollon musagète and the opera Oedipus Rex – take Ancient Greek themes.
Apollon musagète tells of Apollo’s role as the patron of music and poetry and exemplifies Stravinsky’s elegant neo-classical style. Oedipus Rex is a strikingly powerful work based on Sophocles’s tragedy.
Mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnston performs as Jocaste and tenor Stuart Skelton as Oedipus.
