Radio 3 Live in Concert: Philharmonia Orchestra
Live from the Royal Festival Hall
Vladimir Ashkenazy takes the baton for an all-Russian programme with the Philharmonia Orchestra in London.
Stravinsky’s Four Norwegian Moods opens the programme. The orchestral suite takes its material from the soundtrack the composer wrote for a projected Hollywood film about the Nazi invasion of Norway.
The orchestra next welcomes violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja to perform Stravinsky’s Concerto in D major.
After the interval the orchestra performs Tchaikovsky’s programmatic Manfred Symphony. The vast work, which conductor Toscanini considered to be Tchaikovsky’s finest, is based on Lord Byron’s poem Manfred, a dramatic tale of a tortured nobleman who seeks to escape his guilt through death.
