Radio 3 lunchtime Concert: Barry Douglas and Friends
The first of a series of four concerts curated by Barry Douglas
Barry Douglas personally curates a series of concerts at LSO St Lukes. The first features Brahms’s Seven Fantasies and Schubert’s Piano Sonata in B flat, both performed by Douglas himself.
The pianist’s project to record the complete works for solo piano of Brahms and Schubert within five years began in 2012, with the first two volumes receiving wide acclaim. Reviewing the second Brahms volume in the May 2013 issue of BBC Music Magazine, critic Jessica Duchen said: ‘Douglas’s pianism is as rewarding as before: his tone is a deep velvet cushion, the legatos full of affection and the rhythms galvinised with great energy’, awarding the collection five stars.
Later in the week Douglas is joined by Chloë Hanslip (violin) and Richard Watkins (horn) for Brahms’s Violin Sonata No. 2 and the trio in E flat for horn, violin and piano.
