The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny
Thursday Opera Matinee
The Vienna State Opera, conducted by Ingo Metzmacher, brings us a performance of Weill’s satirical opera, The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. Three fugitives decide to set up a pleasure city where rich men can have fun in a world of financial uncertainty. Weill uses rag-time and jazz styles alongside more traditional formal counterpoint, inspiring artists such as David Bowie and The Doors to cover the Alabama Song, performed by Jenny and the prostitutes in the first act of the opera. Angelika Kirchschlager stars as Jenny.
