When Roland Petit’s choreography for Bizet’s Carmen was premiered in London in 1949 the vivid flashes of flesh and highly charged erotic scenes caused uproar. Amidst controversy, calls to ban the show and ubiquitous complaints about a lack of morality, the show was, as these things always are, a roaring success.

Now dancers of the Paris National Opera Ballet present Petit’s choreography in their own production, with Clairemarie Osta and Nicolas Le Riche starring in lead roles. It is an intense and vivid presentation with music from Orchestre Colonne conducted by Paul Connelly.
