Searching for the Messiah
Violinist Ruth Palmer seeks out the world's best Stradivarius violin
Violinist Ruth Palmer seeks out the world’s best Stradivarius violins in a documentary exploring not just these exquisite instruments, but also their accessibility to musicians.
Violins made by Antonio Stradivari are known for their unrivalled sound quality, but they are also known for their price tag, and often become collectors items rather than being used for practical musicianship.
‘The Messiah’ itself, the best preserved Stradivari in existence, is kept in a cabinet in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
The programme details the history of some of these violins, as well as providing the opportunity to hear them played by world-class performers such as Joshua Bell, Steven Isserlis and Heinrich Schiff.
